Gran Burrone (meaning "RIvendell" from "The Lord of the Rings") is situated in an ancient hamlet named "La Rocca" and dating back to the 11th century which was a former base for pilgrims and Templar Knights on their journey to the "Terra Santa" (Holy Land). The owner recently bought what was once a ruin at the borders of the hamlet and restored it in total respect of the original structure, using antique materials, hand-made cotto floors and beamed ceilings. The interiors have been furnished very comfortably and with all modern amenities, including a relaxing room with Jacuzzi. The particular 'knight theme' furniture of the dining room, with original metal armors and decorations reflects the owner's passion for the Templars' history adding a special atmosphere to the interiors. The property boasts beautiful views on the landscapes of Garfagnana, a very attractive and still unspoilt region north of Lucca. This is an ideal getaway for those fond of hiking who love exploring pretty villages and Romanian churches. The swimming pool (3,5 x 10 m) has been placed on the most panoramic point on the estate, granting stunning views.

The neighbour has a cat that may came around during your stay. Thus we do not recommend this property to those allergic to cat dander.

Gran Burrone has been purpose built for holiday letting until the owner decides to retire there I think. The house is well built with good plunbing and electrics - we didn't test the heating but hot water was available so it can be assumed to work. There is no air conditioning though I doubt it would be needed at that altitude. We didn't use the jaccuzi. The swimming pool was in good repair with a strongly fixed ladder. It was cleaned using a robot twice a week. There is a feature medieval banquet dining hall which is interesting but we didn't disturb it.The rest of the house is decorated and furnished in old traditional style to a high spec . but has satellite TV and WiFi as well. The views from the grounds and most windows are fantastic. La Rocca was originally a strategic watch tower location covering several valleys. The remains of the castle are close to Gran Burrone. The garden is well designed and kept with mature plants and bushes and the use of pine trees gives privacy. La Rocca is a small hamlet with steep narrow lanes between the houses. That means car access is limited and thought should be given to age and fitness of residents. In Gran Burrone's case the car has to be left in a communal park and access continued on foot. This includes hauling of luggage and heavy shopping. Anyone who is seriously overweight or has had a recent illness would not be comfortable, especially in the heat. There are no amenities within walking distance, so transport is essential. I don't intend to paint a bleak picture - we are in our 70's and managed fine, but others may find it difficult if unfit. Paulo the owner and Emma who cleans twice a week, were lovely people and very helpful. All in all a great venue, but if you want to see a mountain view, you need to climb it first!

We have had the most wonderful week. We spent most of our days at the house, enjoying the magnificent views, the birdsong, the swimming pool and the jacuzzi bath. The house is very well equipped and catered to our every need. Thanks, too, to Emma who looked after us very well during our stay. She was very friendly, professional and efficient. We were also looked after extremely well by all the team at Salogi who were most informative and helpful both before and during our stay. I would certainly book a future holiday with them, again, on any return visit to Tuscany. My only complaint is that we have to leave ... but I know in my heart that we will return to this beautiful house and area again, one day soon.

Hi, I can truly recommend the house, the area and the agency (Salogi) via whom we booked the house. The house is very comfortable with everything you need for a great holiday: nice pool, great views, peaceful and still close to Lucca, Pisa and other places for day trips. Also the cleaning service was nice as I meant we really didn't need to do anything apart from enjoying the holiday. The service from the agency was great helping us not only booking the house but also during our stay they were very helpful and always at hand to provide help/advice and nothing was every a problem or an effort. Great welcome package on arrival too. We spend 3 weeks at this house and basically didn't want to return home. Also thanks to the owner who makes the effort to present the house well and keeping every thing in good condition. Regards Rob.

It was marvelous! The children felt as if it was 800 years ago and enjoyed the pool (obviously). We enjoyed the view and the fact that everything is so well cared. Thanks for everything and we hope to be back some day.

We spent an amazing week at Gran Burrone! It is such a beautiful house in beautiful surroundings, and we enjoyed days by the pool, eating dinner at the patio, and nightly baths in the Jacuzzi. Gran Burrone lived up to an beyond our expectations.

We had a magical week at Gran Burrone. The villa far exceeded our expectations. The home, the views, local wine and the serenity of the area provided us all a dream vacation. We also thoroughly enjoy many evenings in the Templar knight room.
